Shiny Newsletter :: August 06

“Be content with what you have. Rejoice in the way things are. When you realise there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.” Tao Te Ching
The focus of the month during classes this month (August) is santosha (*contentment, in Sanskrit). Contentment doesn’t mean just giving up all energy and simply rolling along – rather, it means going out and following exciting leads that present themselves to you, seeing the good and inspiring in the everyday, and finding happiness in your life! It’s about dancing to the music of your life.
Instead of thinking the grass is always greener on the other side, or the person next to you is doing the pose better, or you would be happier when you get that pay rise/partner/new house etc. we should take a look at the goodness in our lives right now! Just by stepping into a yoga class we see that we are fit and well enough to actually get on the mat. We are surrounded by like-minded, giving people. We find balance and strength in new poses. All of these basic things should bring us much sunshine and contentment.
Yoga Workshop @ The Gallery Shake off the winter blues and get ready for spring with this inspiring yoga & art-filled Spring Rejuvination Workshop on Sunday 3rd September. I’m running this fun 3 hour workshop with well-respected and amazing yoga teacher/actress Nicky West. The day will involve a dynamic Hatha Yoga class with pranayama (breath techniques), meditation, inversions and visualisation, plus some fun creative work – be prepared to put your artist hats on!
Be inspired, and do some sun salutes under artworks by the next Picasso at Jammy Gallery! Spaces are limited, so please book early! Time: 10am–1pm Cost: $40 Where: Jammy Gallery, 44-54 Botany Road, Alexandria.
What I’m Reading… Thanks to everyone who shared with me their thoughts on Eat, Pray, Love which I was reading a few months ago. I’m so glad you enjoyed this lovely book by author/yogi Elizabeth Gilbert.
Lately I’ve been loving another book, Living the Good Life by Linda Cockburn. She takes her husband and young son on an Aussie adventure – moving to a property in Queensland and attempting to go 6 months without spending a dollar on food, power, water or transport. Amazing, funny and inspiring, this book shares some of her home-grown recipes, as well as her ups and downs. Also includes lots of facts about Australian resource consumption, which all yoga fans should be aware of.
Updated Timetable… check out my timetable around Sydney City – I teach 6 days a week so there should be a class that suits you well! It’s getting much lighter in the mornings as well so don’t let the Winter darkness be an excuse for you! From Newtown to the City, Prymont to Balmain, I teach flowing hatha at a variety of venues. Check them out! And remember, if you would like a private lesson (for kids or adults) don’t hesitate to contact me.
Change of Seasons August in Australia is typically the coldest and windiest month of the year, which helps us to rid the body of stagnant energy, stale toxins and get ready for a bright and energetic Spring time. However, we have to make it through the next few weeks before welcoming the warm sunshine, so be sure to fill the body with nutritious goodies to keep it in tip-top shape. My favourite, quick and easy snack on the go is a freshly squeezed carrot, apple, beetroot and ginger juice. Beetroot is a great blood builder, and ginger promotes digestion. This blend gets the body’s juices flowing and is delicious as well – give it a go!
On a sad note, Shiny Yoga sends good wishes & hugs to Jacasta of Rasa Yoga who is making the move interstate. We will miss your inspiring teaching and hope to catch you very soon. Good luck!! And speaking of luck, fingers crossed to all of you who are participating in the city2surf fun run this weekend – see you out there! If you have any thoughts, questions, or enquiries, I’d love to hear from you! Drop us a line and see you on the mat soon!Namaste, stella x
